Victor E. Backus, Sr. Obituary (1926

Victor E. Backus, Sr, 88, of Buchanan passed away Monday, January 12, 2015 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka. He was born April 15, 1926 to Carl and Matie Backus in Buchanan. On July 24, 1948, Victor married Phyllis Joyce Leach at a ceremony in Angola, IN. Joyce preceded him in death December 9, 1999. He was a member of the Buchanan American Legion Post 51 for 54 years and a member of the VFW for 30 years. Victor is survived by daughter, Janice Leiter; son, Victor E. (Mary) Backus, Jr; brother, Ernie (Jean) Backus of Niles; grandchildren, Bruce, Skii, Tania, Shelley, Felicia, Victor III, Crystal, and Richie and 13 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Matie; wife of 51 years, Joyce; son, Richard Backus, Sr; 7 brothers, and 5 sisters. Funeral services for Victor will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan with Pastor Paul Deeds of Bethel Apostolic Tabernacle officiating. Visitation will be two hours prior from 11-1 p.m. at Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan. Burial will take place at 10 am on Monday, January 19, 2015 at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post 51, Buchanan.
